How to Choose the Right Travel Insurance

How to choose the right travel insurance

When it comes to choosing travel insurance you need to be aware of many things. There are literally thousands of companies worldwide that offer various travel insurance policies, so choosing the correct one is essential. Not all policies are the same and you could be left with a large bill if you are not covered for a problem whilst you are away.

When you book a holiday through a certain travel company, they may offer you free travel insurance. If this is the case, do read the small print because the chances are that it will not be as comprehensive as you thought. There may be things on the free insurance policy that you will not be covered for, things such as lost luggage or medical cover.

Whilst looking to purchase travel insurance you will need to see if the policy has the main things included in the price:

  • Medical and injury cover – 24hr help and assistance
  • Lost and stolen possessions – such as money, suitcases, ski equipment etc
  • Holiday cancellation
  • Personal liability cover
  • Flight delay

Are you a frequent traveller?
If you will be travelling more than a couple of times a year, then it may be beneficial to purchase multi-trip travel insurance. This will work out much cheaper than buying it each time you travel.

Some policies limit the length of individual trips that are covered to 21, 35 or 42 days so make sure you check this. If you go away for longer you may not be insured. If in doubt always ask the insurance company.

Many companies offer family cover, this usually includes 2 adults and up to 4 children, but again this can vary between companies so do read all details carefully.

Remember
If you see a very cheap insurance deal available, always read the small print to ensure that you will be covered for every eventuality, otherwise you could end up out of pocket and your holiday ruined.

It is always worthwhile doing your research first before you purchase any type of insurance.
