You can’t turn on your television or your radio without hearing about it-somebody else that’s managed to save 10-20% or more on their car insurance! They’re always talking about how much less they’re paying than their neighbors, who are insanely jealous of their low, low car insurance rates. So why is it so hard to translate those savings over to real life?
The first step to actually finding the kind of cheap car insurance you keep hearing about is to shop around. Why? Because in a second we’re going to talk about discounts. Discounts can save you 10% or more on your insurance rates without even breaking a sweat, but since all insurance companies aren’t created equal they’re not going to give you the same savings for the same discounts-and those differences can make a huge difference when it comes to your car insurance rates.
Now, let’s look at discounts. There are plenty of discounts that can save you money on your car insurance. As a matter of fact, you’d probably be astonished to find what can save you money on your insurance premiums! For example, did you know that a high credit rating can knock 5% or more off your insurance rates? What about your driving record? A five year good driver discount can do wonders to help you save money.
Other discounts include (but aren’t limited to):
1)Your job. Statistically speaking, teachers and engineers have fewer accidents per year than other occupations. This can work out to equal savings for you.
2) Your car. Did you know that there’s actually an agency out there that keeps track of what cars are involved in accidents each year and reports that information in terms of make and model to insurance companies? It’s called the Highway Loss Data Institute. You can check out their findings at their website and see where your car falls-and find plenty of helpful resources to help you next time you’re shopping for a new vehicle.
3) Your deductibles. It might not technically be considered a discount, but higher deductibles always equal cheaper car insurance. Be careful, however. Sending your deductibles flying can come back to bite you when you have to actually come up with the money after an accident.
4) Your car’s safety features. If you can minimize the chances that you’ll be involved in an accident, or that anyone riding in your car will be injured in an accident, your insurance company will repay you for what you’re saving them in car insurance claims by handing over lower insurance rates. And admit it-wouldn’t you feel better knowing you were just that little bit safer?
Picking up a cheap car insurance policy might not be as easy as walking into a big white room and picking up a box, but it doesn’t have to be the impossible dream either. Do a little homework on your vehicle, then see what your insurance agent can do for you. You (and your wallet) might be pleasantly surprised.
