How to wind a baby

Wind in your babies stomach or bowels can be very upsetting and uncomfortable for your baby, so once you know how to wind / burp your baby you will make them much more comfortable.

Below are some tips on bringing your babies wind up:

  • Sometimes just picking your baby up will help these little bubbles of wind to escape
  • With your baby sat on your knee, place one hand across the baby’s chest, support their chin with your thumb and index finger. Lean your baby across that support hand and gently pat or rub his back with your free hand
  • Don’t pat your baby’s back, just rub it gently
  • If your baby doesn’t get any wind up straight away, they may not have wind
  • Babies don’t always manage a big burp, sometimes just a small gurgle in their stomach could be a sign that any wind has escaped

If you feel that your baby still has problems with wind that can’t be helped by gentle rubbing or any of the above techniques, then speak to your midwife or health visitor as they may be able to recommend something such as colic drops for your baby. Always remember to read all instructions and get expert advice for your baby before giving them any form of drops, especially as not all wind remedies are suitable for newborn babies.
