ctrl-alt-del - how to reboot a computer

Your computer is probably one of the best gadgets you have ever owned, but I bet it can also be the biggest pain in the butt too! There are times when your computer may just hang and stop functioning, often for no reason at all. When this happens the only way to get the computer to work again is to reboot it.

There are other times when you may need to reboot a computer such as when new software has been installed or when there has been a Windows or other operating system update.

So how do you reboot your computer?

There are several ways to reboot your computer; here are four of them. Do you know of any more?

1) Press the power button and hold it in for a few seconds. You should be able to hear the computer switch itself off. When it is powered down, leave it for a few seconds more and then switch it on again.

2) If your computer has not frozen you can reboot your computer by going to the start menu and selecting Restart

Windows XP
Start > Turn off Computer > Restart

Windows Vista
Start (the Windows icon in the bottom left hand corner of the screen) > look for the triangular graphic next to the padlock and click it > from the menu that appears click on Restart (see graphic – click for the bigger version)

4) Remove the power source to the computer by pulling the plug out of the socket or removing the power lead from your laptop/computer.
